Increased Accuracy of the Fit of The Crown

The materials and the techniques that are used to fabrication crowns undoubtedly have inherent inaccuracies that manifest in the permanent crown. The traditional process to fabricate a crown is by the use of impression materials to create a duplicate of the prepared tooth, which is then poured in dental stone by the laboratory. Prior to the making the stone model, the impression must be accurate with no voids. If voids are present in the impression, a new impression must be taken. Another disadvantage of the traditional process is when the impression is poured to make a stone model. As the stone hardens, it expands and contracts causing distortions and inaccuracies in the fit of permanent crown. By using an Intra-Oral Scanner to fabricate crowns, this virtually eliminates the expansion and contraction issues of the stone model, as the crown is digitally designed, milled and 3-D printed using CAD-CAM technology. This creates superior, more accurate fitting dental crowns with less chair time for both the dentist and the patient.
